Murchison Falls National Park has a protected area of (3840) located in the northwest, approximately 90 km from Masindi and Uganda’s largest National park. Is comprised of Bugungu and karuma Wildlife Reserves. It is named after the dramatic Murchison falls , where the world’s longest river explodes violently through a narrow cleft in the rift valley escarpment to plunge into a frothing pool 43 m below . It becomes a placid river whose banks are thronged with crocodiles ,hippos, water-bucks and buffaloes, Savannah grassland, riverine forest and woodland characterize Murchison vegetation.
The park is bisected by the Victoria Nile which first races down 80km of white water C rapids before plunging 40m over the remnant rift valley wall at Murchison falls , the centre piece of the park . The falls drain the last of the rivers energy , transforming it into a broad , placid stream that flows quetly across the rift valley floor for 55km to lake Albert .
The parks Wildlife populations have largely recovered from the poaching of the 1980’s in the lash of borassus grassland to the north of antelope are regularly encountered on game drives , and lion are common sight with increasing frequency.
Rabongo forest in the southeast of the Park , is home to chimps and other rain-forest creatures . River Nile itself is home to one of the densest hippo and crocodile Populations , plus a variety of waterbirds including the world’s most rare shoe-bill stock.
In the river sections above the falls , sport fishing is possible .The Nile Perch and Tiger fish are usual fun to fish by anglers . If you intend to do sport fishing , prior booking be made ,since only a few can carry out this activity at designated sites at any time . please carry along your own fishing Equipment . available are some of the boats for hire on prior booking for those who need a boat cruise .
Available is plenty of wildlife / game on the buligi , Before the sun rises too high in the cool early morning , Albert and Queen’s track north of the river Nile , visitors can picnic , enjoy the view and watch Elephants and other game on the grassy hillside at Nyamusika Cliffs . This is a four- hour game drive . please be prepared and you are in the company of a guide . The best time to embark on this activity is 07:00 am and 16:00 pm .

On the river Nile cruise you will see Hippos, crocodiles in abundance, some times animals come to the river to drink water like Elephants ,water bucks ,buffaloes as well as a variety of birds like king fishers ,bee eaters , herons, cormorants and many more if one is lucky the rare shoe-bill stock.
The boat trip starts at 0900 hr and 1400 hr everyday but special time schedules can also be arranged.with park management. The launch cruise which is 17 km from Paraa to the base of the falls and back takes three hours , where as boat trip from paraa to the delta and back takes about four to five hours. One can see a similar variety of animals and birds on either side.
TOP OF THE MURCHISON FALLS ADVENTURE
You can adventure around the top of the Falls , go right up to the water’s edge ,from the boat landing ,one can have an opportunity to hike to the Top of the falls and to get proxy to the narrow gorge through which the river explodes into the falls.Available here are campsites,picnics and walking safaris
KANIYO PABIDI ADVENTURE
This adventure offers an undisturbed area of natural forest within Budongo forest reserve , here you can walk beneath mature buttress rooted mahogany and iron wood trees . Chimpanzee tracking is the main activity here but assuredly you will see many forest birds , that including the chocolate –backed kingfisher , the white-thigh hornbill and puvel’s illadopsis found nowhere else in East Africa.
Kaniyo pabidi is located 8kms from kichumbanyobo along masindi –paraa road. The national forest Forest Authority manages Kaniyo pabidi with a campsite that has water and firewood available.
This Ecotourism centre is located in an island of tropical riverine forest southeast of the protected area. This forest surrounded by savannah grassland is 1 ½ hour drive from paraa. A guide will help you to explore the forest on foot, spotting primates like the black and white colobus monkeys , red tailed monkeys , baboons and sometimes chimpanzees. Other animals, birds and plant species. One can camp and picnic by the Wairingo river, a place ideal for students groups.
HOW TO GET THERE
By Road: from Kampala through masindi, via kichumbanyobo gate, paraa is 4 and a half hours drive , 2 hours on tarmac and 2 and a half hours on murram roada. A 4WD is recommended . The ferry at paraa operates on scheduled time between the southern and northern bank of River Nile.
By air: At pakuba about 19kms northwest of paraa and bugungu 13kms from Paraa , charter services are available to all weather aerodromes.
