Bwindi Impenetrable National Park


Bwindi Impenetrable National park is a home to the rare endangered mountain gorillas in Uganda  , is strategically located at the edge of western rift valley (Albertine rift valley) in south western Uganda. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is shared amongst Rukungiri  , Kisoro  and kabale districts of Uganda.

Bwindi Impenetrable rainforest is among those few in Africa that has flourished through out the last ice age covering around 331 square kilometres with an Altitude range that goes from 1160m ishasha gorge up to 2607m at Rwamanyonyi peak. Having an annual average temperature range of 7-20 degrees celcius with the coldest period being june and july and expecting its heaviest rains during March and April and September –November  , other months are usually dry.

The gigantic rain forest homes to over a half of the world’s mountain gorillas thus it is the major uganda Gorilla Safari destination to visit the endangered mountain gorillas . A deeper look into the inviting beautiful brown eyes of these gentle shy mountain gorillas on Uganda is unarguably the most exciting memorable Uganda wildlife tour encounter that Uganda and Africa at large have to offer coupled with bwindi’s broad biodiversity that gives support to the Eco-Tourism industry as well .

With an altitude range of 1160m to 2607 m, bwindi impenetrable national park boasts of 90 mammal species , including 11 primates plus chimpanzees , with the black and white colobus , which is prominent for its beautiful flowing white tail to show which makes it flourishing Uganda wildlife safari destination as well . Bwindi with its 23 highly localized Albertine endemic present  , the forest ranks as one of the best birding destination. The major tribes include the bakiga, bafumbira   and the batwa.


BINP habitates over 400 endangered gorillas which is about half the total population of mountain gorillas the world has ,  it has over 120 species of mammals which include 7 duirnal primates , with over 360 species of birds and over 260 butterfly species , the afro-montane rain forest has a dense under stone of ferns , vines and shrubs and over 324 tree species recorded there of which 10 don’t appear elsewhere in Uganda making bwindi a must trek to any enthusiastic tourist or traveler.



Having over 400 mountain gorillas  ,Gorilla trekking is the major activity that is carried out .  there are different gorilla goups which are distributed with in bwindi. There is Buhoma, Nkuringo , Ruhija and Rushaga .gorilla tourism started in 1993 . bwindi   was also declared a UNESCO reserve in 1994.

Gorilla tracking permits are sold by Uganda wildlife Authority (UWA) at the headquarters in kampala with only 52 permits available per day . Advance booking at least 6 months is recommended to prevent disappointments. The gorilla tracking activity starts at 8:30 am local time and takes between 4 to 8 hours depending on where the gorillas are feeding from .Gorillas are only visited for a minimum of one hour daily.

The gorilla tracking activity in bwindi is really tedious because of the different steep landscape, therefore it is advisable that one has to be physically fit and carry the right  tracking tools like rain gears , jungle boots because the forest is sometimes wet.


As noted earlier bwindi is one of the best birding destination. It is sanctuary to over 348 bird species and some of them are endemic (they are only found here) some of them include.honeyguide, white-tailed blue monarch ,short tailed warbler , kivi ground rush, wilcock’s , rusty-faced woodland , gruel’s rush warbler , bar tailed trogon and dusky crimson . An enthusiastic bird watcher can identify more than 100 bird species.


Visitors with two or more days in bwindi can ably engage in a hiking tour along the four out land hiking trails that are famously done in the park. The River Munyanga walk in Buhoma

A short walk for visitors with little time to spare along the forest edge offers tourists memorable sight of birds as well as primates. This famous waterfall walk gives an attractive feature of the forest with a colorful array of butterflies , a natural fusion of tree ferns , epithetic ferns , orchids and colorful which is typical of BINP . The walk leads to three attractive crystal clear waterfalls which is typical of a rain forest

The Rushurra walk gives an extensive view across the western rift valley floor, and to its west , the Congo Parc Nationale des virunga providing a wonderful view and is also visible to both  lake Edward and Rwenzori mountain as well . The Muzabajjiro walk provides an unforgrttable view of Bwindi Forest, the western rift valley and the virungas .various pre-historic tree ferns can be witnessed as you make your way to the top, which is a great place for a picnic or lunch.


This walk is recommended for bird watching because it’s the longest and it may take you the full day.Buhoma village walk offers tourists eye catching views like those of a typical rural homestead setting in this region   , a visit to the local traditional healers  , the banana beer brewing demonstration site, captivating traditional cultural perfomances in the evening which are usually performed by womwn groups provide opportunity to experience the traditional dressing fashions as well.

This walk takes that takes over three hours   , is an activity that is managed by the local community thus money received is invested back to the community to improve on their general welfare usually. Visitors may as well walk to the Bamboo zone which is a unique area in BINP.

The Buhoma region forms the northern section of bwindi Impenetrable National Park where gorilla safaris are greatly carried out in Uganda and is the main park headquarters .Buhoma region shelters three of the twelve habituated gorilla families that thrive in the entire habitat of Bwindi .  The habituated gorilla families are also a section of the greater 400  minimum that thrive in the area making bwindi the single habitat in the world which has the great count of mountain gorillas .

The significance of buhoma sector cannot be underestimated considering the fact that the mountain gorilla are world over endangered . The mubare gorilla family the notable gorilla group to receive the first gorilla baby in October 1993 is found in Buhoma . The gorilla group thrives and now features 9 members head by the silverback kanyonyi and has a baby gorilla named kashundwe

Beside Mubare ,   buhoma also features the habyinyanja gorilla group teaming with 18 members commenced the habituation process in 1997 and by 1999 ,it had already started receiving visitors .it deived the naming from the local word nyanjawhich means a pool of water as the group was first sighted near the swamp.

The Buhoma region is indeed gifted ,  the third gorilla family Rushegura under the administration of the mwirima silverback in 2002 and got its name from the local Ebishegura flora. It features 19 members with the dorminant silverback named kabukojo.
